About the kaupapa
In 2022, Oi Collective embarked on a project that unlocked whānau stories and explored tākaro experiences from various angles and perspectives. The aim was to foster inclusive and collaborative conversations, yielding practical outcomes for Te Taitokerau whānau. By placing a range of lived experiences at the heart of the report, we were able to provide an authentic and genuine glimpse into the reality of tākaro within the context of Te Taitokerau. In the end, the report served as a catalyst for advocating for the creation of spaces that allowed Maori to be Maori, to laugh as Maori, and to energise and excite their souls as Maori — ‘kia hihiri te ngakau’.
In 2023 Oi Collective added deep dived into into wahine voices in takaro. Through this exploration it became abundantly clear that the richness of wahine experiences and wisdom is integral to the holistic understanding of takaro. By elevating the figure of Taranga and celebrating the diverse stories of hine, this second report honoured the multifaceted roles of wahine Maori in holding, uplifting and promoting holistic wellbeing through takaro.
