Celebrating Motherhood

SKIP, Oranga Tamariki

Mareikura speaks of female leadership, mana and strength. Oi Collective facilitated this community led co-design project alongside three local organisations with a focus on the young māmā of Kaikohe.

About the kaupapa

Mareikura speaks of female leadership, mana and strength. This kaupapa was founded on the appreciation and empowerment of mothers to express themselves, and their babies as Mareikura - the future chiefs of our communities. This project was based in Kaikohe Northland, engaging mothers from the community including Hiwa-i-te-Rangi, the Kaikohe teen parenting unit. This project was funded by SKIP.

"With Māreikura this is their wairua, they're coming on this journey with their ancestors, with their whānau. It's a different space. You can go straight to opportunities ... they have their identity. Enhancing their identity is going to have more [protective] factors for them as young māmā. We can tell our stories through tukutuku, through waiata and that's the beauty of Māori design. That's what makes us more unique"

Ko te whaea te
